Varieties of Sadistic Tendencies (VAST)
Understanding Sadism
Sadism is a disconcerting personality trait where an individual derives pleasure from causing pain, suffering, or humiliation to others. This term is rooted in the name of the Marquis de Sade, a French philosopher and writer who explored such themes in his works.
Research indicates that sadistic tendencies tend to become more pronounced in late adolescence and are more commonly observed in males than females. Adults with high levels of sadism may be at greater risk of engaging in criminal behavior, encountering difficulties in romantic relationships, and facing workplace challenges.
Assessing Sadistic Tendencies
The Varieties of Sadistic Tendencies (VAST) test, created by Professor Paulhus, D. L., is a psychological tool designed to measure an individual's propensity for sadism across two dimensions:
Direct sadism involves acts of cruelty, aggression aimed at humiliating another person, restricting their freedom, and asserting dominance over them.
Vicarious sadism pertains to a preference for observing the humiliation, physical pain, or emotional distress of others, without directly causing it.
This online test is free and can provide a preliminary assessment of one's sadistic tendencies.
